On September 7th, all over our great nation, the majority of people will have the day off from work and school in order to commemorate Labor Day. And while many of these folks only see end-of-summer sales and barbeques, here in St. Louis we take our Labor Day seriously. In 1894 Congress decreed Labor Day be the first Monday in September after many long and arduous years of turmoil, strife and violence. In the years leading up to the federal government stepping in, it wasn’t unusual for men, women and even children to work 7 days a week, 12 hours a day in an unsafe environment. As the Industrial Revolution continued to grow, labor unions gained in popularity as they protested these horrific working conditions.

Because St. Louis was, and is, a vibrant manufacturing and industrial center, our forefathers were some of the earliest supporters of the labor movement. Two labor organizations were created in 1885, and in 1887 merged to become the St. Louis Trades and Labor Assembly. Finally after years of change, in 1957 the organization known today as the St. Louis Labor Council, was created.

Once again, as in the past, the St. Louis Labor Council will be sponsoring the 2015 St. Louis Labor Day parade. Beginning at 9AM sharp at the corner of 13th and Olive Street, there will be over two dozen individual labor unions, marching bands, beauty queens, floats, classic cars and so much more! Bring a chair, wear your union flair and begin your day by supporting the people who help make St. Louis great!
