Are Bi-Yearly Cleanings Really Necessary?

One of the best things about your bi-yearly dental cleaning is in addition to how wonderful your teeth feel after being professionally cleaned, you also have the security of knowing your teeth are healthy. You get x-rays taken, have your teeth thoroughly cleaned by the hygienist, see the dentist and hopefully leave with a clean bill of oral health and an appointment for six months down the road. But sometimes it doesn’t work that way. Maybe you’re having some pain, or perhaps the x-rays are showing an area of concern. Then maybe the hygienist noticed a small cavity forming or the dentist detects a crack in that old filling.

As you can see from these scenarios, that bi-yearly cleaning is so much more than just scrapping off a little plaque and reminding you to floss better. Preventative maintenance is a big part of your six month check-up and can go a long way in heading off a plethora of future dental problems. Routine maintenance to prevent tooth decay, gum disease and periodontal disease is a major part of your bi-yearly appointment.

Some people believe because they brush and floss regularly, they don’t need to see their dentist but once a year or even once every two years. But be honest, no matter how carefully you floss, doesn’t the hygienist always have to scrap at least some plaque off, especially from around the back teeth? Just think how much more plaque would accumulate if you only had this procedure done every couple of years.

So bottom line, listen to your Mother or at least your insurance provider when they say you need to see Lore, Denise, Jennifer and Dr. Holly twice a year. Whether you’re searching for a new dental home or haven’t been to a dentist in many years, Ellis Dental would be honored to become your next dental provider.
